Pension
Do I have to pay the pension fee?
The National Pension is one of the social insurances that provide benefits after you turn 65 years of age, in turn for paying monthly premiums. All registered residents in Japan aged 20 to 59 years must be covered by the National Pension System, regardless of their nationality. As of the Employees' Pension Insurance System, all persons under 70 are eligible. Other than old age, you will receive basic benefits, for example, when you have a certain level of disability or have lost your spouse. This goes the same for foreign nationals. Check for further information on national pensions here.
If I decide to return to my country, what will happen to the pension premiums that I have already paid?
You can claim a Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment, if your enrollment period is six months or more. You must claim it within two years from the date you no longer had an address in Japan. However, there are requirements for receiving the payment, so make sure to check them carefully. You can see the requirements here.
